Koh Phangan Beyond the Full Moon
A Thai island that has matured past its party reputation into a place where solo women stay for weeks, not nights.
Koh Phangan sits in the Gulf of Thailand, about an hour by ferry from Koh Samui. Most people arrive for the Full Moon Party and discover an island with yoga retreats, quiet northern beaches, and a surprisingly well-developed network of accommodation for solo travelers who want structure without a schedule.
The island splits into two distinct worlds. The southern end around Haad Rin is party infrastructure: hostels, bucket cocktails, and music until dawn once a month. The north and west coasts around Srithanu and Haad Salad run on a different frequency entirely, with co-working spaces, plant-based restaurants, and communities of long-term residents who have been here for years.
Solo women tend to land in one of two camps here. The first comes for the wellness circuit and finds the retreats genuinely good value compared to Bali. The second comes for a cheap, warm island base and discovers that Koh Phangan's infrastructure, particularly the density of small guesthouses run by local families and expat women, makes it unusually easy to meet people without trying.
Who this guide is for
Women who want a Thai island that offers more than a beach but have not yet committed to a wellness retreat. It also works well for solo travelers who want to be around people without staying in a party hostel, because the Srithanu community creates a social infrastructure that requires very little effort to enter.
Koh Phangan neighborhoods
Srithanu
The northwest coast has become the island's wellness hub, with a concentration of yoga shalas, raw food cafes, and long-term rental bungalows along a single main road. Street lighting is inconsistent on side paths but the main road has steady foot traffic from late afternoon into the evening.
Best for: Long stays, yoga retreats, women who want a community without a party.
Getting around: Everything within Srithanu is walkable during the day; a scooter or songthaew covers the gaps after dark.
Haad Rin
The southeastern peninsula holds two beaches back to back: Haad Rin Nok faces east and hosts the Full Moon Party, while Haad Rin Nai is quieter and better for swimming. The main strip is lit and busy with bars and guesthouses, but the roads leading inland lose lighting quickly.
Best for: Women who specifically want the Full Moon Party or budget beachfront guesthouses.
Getting around: Songthaews run a fixed route from Haad Rin to Thongsala and cost more late at night; negotiate before you get in.
Thongsala
The island's main pier town is where ferries arrive and where you find the market, pharmacy, hospital, and most practical errands. It is not a beach destination but it has the best sidewalks and street lighting on the island, with foot traffic until around 10pm.
Best for: Orientation on arrival, practicalities, and the night market on Thursday and Friday evenings.
Getting around: Walkable within the town center; songthaews depart regularly from the pier for all major beaches.
Haad Salad
A small northwest bay with a calm beach, clear water, and a handful of mid-range resorts tucked into the hillside. It is quieter than both Srithanu and Haad Rin, with a few good restaurants and dive shops operating out of the bay.
Best for: Women who want a genuinely quiet beach without total isolation.
Getting around: Limited songthaew access; a scooter makes Haad Salad significantly more practical for day trips.
Chaloklum
A traditional fishing village on the north coast that has seen far less development than the rest of the island. A handful of dive operators and a few local restaurants line the bay, and the pace here is genuinely slow.
Best for: Snorkeling day trips to Koh Ma and women who want to see island life outside the tourist circuit.
Getting around: About 30 minutes from Thongsala by scooter; songthaews run here but infrequently.

Bubba's Coffee Bar
SrithanuA long-running breakfast and coffee spot in the heart of Srithanu that draws a mix of yogis, long-term expats, and people working on laptops all morning. The smoothie bowls and espresso are both consistently good.
Counter seating faces the road and the solo-laptop crowd makes this a low-pressure place to sit for a few hours.
Orion Healing Centre Café
SrithanuPlant-based meals served in an open-air space attached to a retreat center, with a menu built around raw food and herbal drinks. The lunch hours are busy with retreat participants which makes conversation easy.
A communal table setup means you will almost certainly end up talking to someone.
Nira's Bakery
SrithanuIsraeli-run bakery that has been operating in Srithanu for years, known for hummus, freshly baked bread, and strong coffee. Opens early and fills up by mid-morning.
Counter seating and a steady flow of regulars make this one of the easier solo breakfast spots on the island.
Cucina Italiana
Haad YaoA small Italian restaurant on the west coast run by an Italian couple, with fresh pasta and wood-fired pizza that people drive across the island for. Book ahead for dinner.
The owner is known for making solo diners feel at ease; bar seating is available if you ask.
Thongsala Night Market
ThongsalaThursday and Friday evenings bring a street market to the pier area with local vendors selling grilled skewers, pad thai, mango sticky rice, and fresh fruit. Prices here are significantly lower than at beach restaurants.
Plastic stool seating alongside locals; eating here alone is completely unremarkable.
Things to do in Koh Phangan
Snorkeling at Koh Ma
A small island connected to the northwest coast by a sandbar at low tide, with coral reef on both sides and good visibility most of the year. You can wade across the sandbar from Mae Haad beach without a boat.
Go at low tide in the morning before the tour boats arrive; Mae Haad beach has a few shops renting basic snorkel sets.
Full Moon Party
Held on Haad Rin Nok beach once a month on the night of the full moon, drawing tens of thousands of people for an all-night beach party with multiple music stages. The scale is genuinely impressive once; whether you want to repeat it is personal.
Wear shoes you can lose and leave valuables locked at your accommodation; the crowd peaks around midnight and thins by 4am.
Yoga Retreat at Agama Yoga
One of Southeast Asia's best-known yoga schools operates out of Srithanu with courses ranging from a single class to month-long certifications. The teacher training draws a serious international crowd.
Drop-in classes run most mornings; the schedule and pricing are posted on their website and worth checking before arrival if this is your main reason for coming.
Viewpoint Hike to Than Sadet Waterfall
A series of waterfalls in the island's interior connected by hiking trails through jungle, with carved royal inscriptions from Thai kings dating back to the 1800s. The walk takes a few hours at an easy pace.
Go early in the morning before the heat peaks; the trail starts near the Than Sadet road and is well-marked.
Sunrise at Khao Ra
The island's highest point at around 600 meters offers views across the Gulf of Thailand on clear mornings. The trail is steep in places and takes about 90 minutes from the trailhead.
Start by 5am for the sunrise; the trail is easier to navigate with a headlamp and waterproof shoes after rain.
Getting around Koh Phangan
Songthaews are the main shared transport on the island, running fixed routes between Thongsala pier and the major beaches. Fares increase significantly after dark and drivers negotiate individually, so agree on the price before you get in. Scooter rental is available everywhere for a daily rate and is genuinely the most practical way to move around once you are comfortable riding on narrow hilly roads. If you have not ridden a scooter before, the roads on Koh Phangan are not a good place to learn: the hills are steep and the roads are uneven in places. Grab does not operate on the island. Motorcycle taxis are available around the pier and beach areas but there is no app; you wave them down. For transfers to and from the ferry, any guesthouse can arrange a pickup.
When to visit Koh Phangan
December through April brings dry weather and calm seas on the east coast, making Haad Rin and the Full Moon Party beaches at their most swimmable. May through October is the southwest monsoon season; the west coast beaches like Haad Salad and Haad Yao stay calmer during this period while the east gets rough. September and October see the heaviest rain and occasional flooding on interior roads.
Local knowledge
- The songthaew fare from Haad Rin to Thongsala doubles or triples after midnight on Full Moon nights; have cash ready and expect to share with strangers.
- The 7-Eleven in Thongsala is one of the few places on the island to withdraw cash reliably; ATM fees here are the same as everywhere in Thailand.
- Phone signal is weakest in the interior and north coast; download offline maps before leaving Thongsala.
- The sandy paths around Srithanu flood quickly in heavy rain; flip flops are useless after a downpour.
- Ko Phangan Hospital is in Thongsala and handles most basic issues; for anything serious, the ferry to Koh Samui and the international hospital there is the standard recommendation from locals.
- Pharmacies in Thongsala stock most standard medications without a prescription; the pharmacy near the pier is the most reliably stocked.
- Co-working spaces in Srithanu have reliable fiber internet; cafe wifi outside that area is inconsistent and often throttled by the end of the day.
